  Alasdair James Gray (28 December – 29 December ) was a Scottish writer and artist. His first novel, Lanark (), is seen as a landmark of Scottish fiction. He published novels, short stories, plays, poetry and translations, and wrote on politics and the history of English and Scots literature. Lanark was the first book to show me how imaginative and also how illuminating of my own personal experience a book written by someone else could be. It is a shame that Alisdair Gray never lived to see his longed for Scottish Independence but at least in the next decade his hopes may well be :// Lanark took years to Lanark book and is really two books woven together, an autobiographical novel and an fantasy/sci-fi allegory.
